The completion of our beloved Leagues Club made a significant move forward last Friday when we, and City of Sydney Council, reached agreement on a hybrid plan for the Club that would allow us to plan the next phase towards re-opening.
The decision is a significant milestone for the ongoing resurrection of South’s for all our supporters as it capped off the same week that 9 years ago saw the Rabbitohs win a High Court judgment to allow them admittance back into the NRL competition.
We are pleased to announce that as of 4 o’clock Friday 9th July the Land & Environment Court upheld the appeal and granted consent to the Leagues Club to continue building, with the compromised hybrid plan.
“This is a huge monkey off our back “said Leagues Club Chairman, Bill Alexiou-Hucker “Unfortunately we have had to make some concessions to Council in our plans to ensure the continuation of building and moving forward for a reopening date in the very near future. There has been some people in the community trying to muddy the waters by telling members that the Leagues Club would never re-open, this Board, our CEO Ken Stewart and his team, the builders Trivest and all the companies that have supported us to date, would not have worked this hard to get to this result if that was anyone’s intention.”
CEO Ken Stewart added; "This decision will now enable us to move quickly and give our loyal members a venue they can rely upon to offer a safe and comfortable environment and one which will provide a variety of entertainment styles to cater for all our valuable patrons."
Our expectation is for completion of the building within three months
